2024 Week 18 One Daily Positive, Project 365 and A Selfie a Day

April

I've been so cold this week, we've had the heating on and I'm fed up of still wearing winter clothes. Really not feeling at all well, had a heavy cold and been so lethargic, no idea what's wrong with me.

120  Monday Woke with a snotty nose. Hung the washing out. Peter took me to work then popped the roof on the van to let it dry for the day. I got a lift home. I was exhausted and went to bed for the afternoon. We had tea and an early night.

121  Tuesday Off to work, it was a long day. Home via the retail park and coffee shop. Finished watching A Confession on ITV , had a bath and bed, still coughing and sneezing. I booked a flight to Paris for June to meet up with a friend from South Africa for a weekend.

122  Wednesday My uncle died this morning, the one we've been taking mum to visit in Sussex. My son's 32nd birthday. I'm starting to feel old now. Coffee after work with friends. We stayed up watching the telly.

123  Thursday A difficult day in work and the fire alarm went off just before the end of the day. I stayed to help with homework club. Home via town to post a parcel to grandson and some cards then after dinner popped round to visit a colleague/friend. We both needed it after work today.

124  Friday Awake at 4.30am, brain over thinking. Into work and back, friend called for me to take me for coffee, home for dinner, TV and bed late.

125  Saturday Visited Stephanie in Gloucester and took her shopping and for coffee and cake. Home to chill and watch TV. I felt really ill so our visit was cut short, came home and went to bed.

126  Sunday Still not feeling right, dosed up on meds, popped to the shops, then spent the day dusting, putting winer clothes away and sleeping.

Creating an ideal outdoor space

Since returning to the UK in 2021 after 12 years in South Africa and Dubai, I've really missed having outdoor spaces to sit, relax and dine in.

In the summer in Dubai it was too hot to sit outside, but October through to April you couldn't get me in the house, apart from the odd sand storm and the occasional rain, but even when it rained I'd be outside, under the sun umbrella enjoying the cooler temps.

South Africa was perfect weather for outdoor life apart from after sunset to sunrise during the months of June and July when temperatures would drop below zero, but were in the 20s during the day. The summer heat was broken every 3-4 days with an afternoon/evening of thunderstorms to clear the air.

Houses in South Africa and Dubai are very different to hose in the UK. The ones we rented were open planned, floor to ceiling windows and lots of them, tiled floors throughout and in South Africa we had a pool and BBQ areas both inside and outside the house.

This was our first house in South Africa with a balcony over a covered area, the balcony lead to a conservatory with bifold doors and a built in BBQ area.

The conservatory leading to the balcony.

The built in BBQ behind the black panel.

Our second home in South Africa, no covered area. We were still able to enjoy the outdoors but in the summer we'd often have to dash for cover with sudden storms and gigantic hail stones the size of golf balls.

BBQ area.

Our first home in Dubai, no covered area. But a lot of the time it was too hot during the day to sit outside so most of our time outdoors was in the evening.

Our second home in Dubai. Making use of the sun umbrella and shade from the neighbouring villas.

A much smaller garden, but you really didn't need anything bigger than this as most of the year was spent in doors.

A covered area on the balcony, perfect for early mornings and evenings to sit out in, even in the height of summer.

The downside of Dubai for outdoor life, apart from the heat was the sand storms and the unexpected rain fall, that would leave a mess to be cleaned up every time.

It has been important to me to be able to re create a part of our lifestyle abroad back in the UK and this has been achieved with the building of a sun/garden room at the back of the house and 2 sets of double doors we can open wide into the garden to bring the outdoors in and a covered seating area.

I've set this area up so it can be used all year round and it is sheltered from the wind and the rain and I don't have to cover the chair pod or bring the cushions in and out. I also don't have to sweep up any sand every day like I did in Dubai and unlike South Africa I don't have to deal with the house filling with red mud on our feet after storms or worry about spiders the size of dinner plates or lizards and 'parktown prawns' running around.

I've been using this space all year round, during the winter, rain storms, snow and in summer. I can move the pod in the middle of winter to sit in the corner where the doors from the two rooms meet and I have blankets to wrap myself up in to keep warm.

We've recently taken down an old shed and the base has made a perfect patio for the table and chairs we bought in South Africa to be sited and we'll be assembling the umbrella once the winds have died down.

There's a new storage box for all the cushions and tableware so we don't have to lug cushions back and forth from the house and find somewhere to store it all. There's a large rug also for using on the lawn when the grandchildren come to play. We've still got the large sun umbrella we had in South Africa and Dubai we will reassemble here soon. It is a sun trap here.

The BBQ can be rolled round when needed and we can cook under the covered area as well if the weather is against us.

We've still got the smaller shed to take down and we're building raised beds in the space. There will also be a compost bin, cold frame and green house built where the wheelbarrow is currently living in the 1st photo and some tidying up down the side of the house and 2 wooden gates to give us some more privacy and security.

I think I've managed to succeed in bringing in a little of everything we had from our life abroad and have created my ideal outdoor space back in the UK. If I could just add a little more sun to the scene I'd be very happy, but nothing over 25c please as it gets too hot to enjoy.

Are you an outdoor person?

April 2024 - Days out in the camper van

We've slept in the camper van for the first time. In fact we've had two weekends away now. We've reached the stage where the weather is warm enough now and the hotel prices are more expensive than the camps sites. The first night was on my cousins drive in Seaford in Sussex after dropping my mum off to stay with her brother and sister in law for the week, as it's a 4+ hour drive from where we live and driving down on a Friday night after work, meant a late arrival, but we were able to plug in and use their facilities. My aunt and uncle always had camper vans when I was a child and I've always dreamed of owning one, so it felt right to spend our first night on their drive.

For the second night we headed off in the direction of home along the coast and booked onto a camp site in Selsey. It didn't take long to set up the electricity and fill the water tank and Peter had spent some time reading the manual so it was quick to locate all the switches to turn pumps on and set the timer for the heater.

We realised we had too much stuff 'just in case' in the van, so there was a lot of moving things around to use different parts of the van. We rotated both the front seats, set the table up and left the bedding under the bench seat until it was needed and once we'd popped the roof, left the bed hooked up to give us full height space so we could walk around freely.

This arm rest does get in the way, regardless of whether it's up or down, we'll just have to get used to it and the odd bruise or three.

We do have a portable toilet in the van, but have made the decision not to use it and book camp sites with toilet and shower facilities. Thankfully the camp site was quiet so there was plenty of hot water and it was all very clean. Just need to remember to shower before the evenings get too cold.

By removing the portable toilet and purchasing a cable tidy we've free'd up more storage space and Peter purchased a food grade hose pipe to fill the water tank on site, rather than driving with the extra weight. We just need to purchase a container to drain the waste water into, although some camp sites do have 'drive over pits' to empty into.

We can wash up in the van, but chose to use the washing up facilities. We have a foldable crate to use to carry the washing up in and it can also be used for the shower to keep items off the floor and use it to keep the floor dry from wet boots.

We had enough bedding with us, but it did get a little chilly during the night so we packed warmer clothing to sleep in for the second weekend. We can raise the bed and clip it in place with the bedding in if we stay for more than one night, but we can't fold the roof flat with it there.

There's a safety net to fix when we're sleeping to stop us falling out the bed, but it meant we couldn't reach the shelf where we had put our phones and car keys etc. For our second weekend I packed some S hooks and a handbag tidy to hang to drop items in, for ease to reach and save smaller items falling down the sides.

I keep a mirror in the cupboard and with the side lights I've created a little corner to do my hair and make up. We've got power points so I could use a hair dryer and we do have a solar panel so we can run off grid. Non slip mats mean we don't have to keep packing things away. We won't necessarily camp in the van every weekend, but we do use it a lot for brewing up a cup of tea, we can make proper coffee and have lunch in and use we do set up the table a lot on days out.

We've used the boot liner from our old car and cut it to size to line the cupboards and shelves and bought a couple of door mats for the main doors.

Our second trip was back to Sussex to collect mum this weekend. We travelled down Friday after work and stayed at Bicester about 90 mins drive from home, arriving around 6pm. It took 15 mins to set up as we've got into a routine of who does what. I pop the roof, rotate the seat, set up the table, unpack the pjs and wash bags and put our bags under the sink, turn the water and gas on and put the water heater on once Peter has filled the water tank up and plugged the electricity in. Curtains are drawn and shades go up at front windows.

It does get a bit messy as we move from day to night and night to day, but everything falls back into place quickly as we each have our own jobs to do.

When we wake up in the morning we remove the bags from under the sink and put the bedding in their place, we raise the bed into the roof space and fix it in place.

When we travel the bedding lives under the bench seat.

Packing up in the morning, takes around 15 mins. After breakfast has been eaten, Peter does the washing up and has a shower. I put the table away and rotate the chairs, window shades are taken down and put away, bedding goes under the bench seat, pillows on top. I wash, brush my teeth, dress and do my hair and make up. We then put the washing up away. Peter unplugs the electricity. The gas and water get switched off, bags get packed away, bed lowered and pulled flat, straps connected, roof pulled down as sides pulled in. Peter checks the outside to ensure all the canvas is tucked away and roof locked into place. Electric cable and hose put away and we're off.

Second night in Brighton and repeat the above.

The more time we spend in the van, the more time we want to spend in it.

A few other tips we've learnt are:

Fire extinguisher is a must. It gets unpacked every time we stop and park up.

Felt pads on the pots to stop them rattling and cloth under the bowl to stop it moving around.

Plant pot holder as a bin

Getting into a sleeping bag in the roof space is tricky so it's best to stand on the top rung of the ladder, slide over feet, pull it up and swing into bed.

An S hook and small bag to hold glasses, book, phone and charger in over night.

We've joined the Caravan and Campers Club and also found a website called Pitchup. Quite a few sites want a minimum of two nights stay, there are more grass pitches than hardstanding available and of course electric hook up sites are in more demand, so in future if we're only doing a night or two we can use the solar battery.

2024 Week 17 One Daily Positive, Project 365 and A Selfie a Day

April

I've been struggling with a bad back for a couple of weeks, it's really painful when sitting. I think it's an old injury from when I slipped 3 discs on a water ride at the Atlantis, the Palm in Dubai in 2014. it last flared up in 2021 with a hospital stay for 3 nights. Lots of heat pads, exercises, walking and occasional pain killers. I'm also questioning whether I've got a sinus problem as the bridge of my nose has been hurting for a couple of weeks and I've been getting headaches as well as migraines, so I've bought some over the counter medication, having checked with the pharmacist it doesn't interfere with my migraine meds.

113  Monday Into work and home by 3.45pm to set up zoom for 90 minute online autism training. Rest of the evening spent watching TV and reading.

Video call with grandson

114  Tuesday A difficult day in work, working with new students in new situations and dealing with a couple of behaviour issues, but fully supported. Into town for the post office and a coffee, research and note taking for Sexual Ethics and typed up and emailed to student and research on how John Donne presents women in The Flea. I planted up the hanging basket and put the ironing away, bath and early night.

115  Wednesday Lift into work and back. I was a scribe and reader for GCSE for a student in a mock Biology paper today. After work I went down the retail park for a coffee with two friends from work. Home to read, bath and early night. I typed up some research on the use of classroom fidgets as a tool to learning.

116  Thursday Lift into work. Peter got the van ready for the weekend. A colleague from his working days called in on his way home from Scotland for a couple of hours. I got a lift from work to the retail park and met them for coffee. I packed for the weekend, Peter cooked dinner and we watched A Confession while I
blogged.

117  Friday Into work, my student wasn't in but I still attended her lessons to take notes as her A levels are coming up very soon. I finished an hour and a half early to compensate for the training I did on Monday after work, home, packed the van and Peter drove to Bicester where we set up for the night. Mary popped over to join us for a cuppa.

118  Saturday Up early, packed up and drove to Brighton, stopping for lunch along the way. After setting up, we caught the bus into Brighton, for a wander around The Lanes, a late lunch/early tea and a walk along the pier and played the 2p slots, we walked back, got drenched. An early shower, snacks in the van, reading, watching downloaded programmes on the iPad and an early night.

119  Sunday Packed up early, off to collect mum and on the road home by 11am. We stopped to grab some lunch and coffee, dropped mum off and got home at 6pm. Unpacked, washing on, bath, TV and bed.
