2024 Week 47 - One Daily Positive, Project 365 and A Selfie a Day.

Peter came home on Thursday. I need him back now, but I also needed this time on my own. I'm the person everyone turns to for support and I just couldn't be it. Everyone asks me how Peter is. no one phoned him and asked me, it was my responsibility and I just didn't have the energy. Not to care for him, but to be responsible for him. What about me? Peter knew this, his trip was already booked, he needed some face to face time with people. I've seen someone everyday apart from last Saturday, but it was good to be on my own, it had to happen at some point.

I haven't had access to my classroom this week due to language oral exams, I've just taken my students to the library or into their lessons, it's been fine, however others have worried about me not having had things put into place and the that stressed me out. no one did anything because they didn't know I'd be back and I've had more important things to worry about and things like this don't worry me. There is only me in my department, I just don't understand why others are stressing over things that they don't need to be involved with, even when I say I'm fine.

I've had video calls from child 4 and grandson almost daily. Grandson who is 3 asks me to go to his room to play Paw Patrol with him. I play with the toys and he tells me what to do and where to put them. it's funny 'Granny, go upstairs and play Paw Patrol for me' He can't wait for his visit next month to play with them himself.

323  Monday I was awake at 4am. By 7.15am I'd walked the dog and was ready for work, so I went to caffe Neros and had a coffee and read my book. Work was Ok, but I found myself upset midmorning and just wanted to be somewhere on my own. I had some planning time, but my classroom was being used for oral exams for Spanish and French so I was in the staffroom and library. I did nothing all evening. Just sat for several hours, didn't even turn the TV on.

324  Tuesday Woke to heavy snow which kept up for most of the day. I struggled to leave the house this morning. Work was hard, I was very emotional. When I'm with students I'm OK, my mind is focused. After work, I collected Bailey and walked to the retail park to meet my ex student and her mum. They talked about their upcoming holiday next week and it was good to hear their excitement.I still didn't physically feel right. A more productive evening with washing and a tidy round.

325  Wednesday I was able to make it into work on time having woken at 6.50am, however I did have to clean up after Bailey and take her for a walk, then straight out the door into work. Home to more mess in the kitchen and another walk, then out for a food shop, more mess in the kitchen and a chewed t towel. Bailey and Iw walked back down to the retail park to meet a friend for coffee. Home for a bath, watch TV, walk Bailey and bed at 11pm.

326  Thursday I had the day off work as I had my gallbladder scan in the morning followed by therapy. Going into a hospital is quite traumatic for me at the moment. Peter home 4pm. We had a take away for dinner and I introduced him to I'm a Celeb.

327  Friday Work for the morning, then the afternoon and evening spent at home. Email from HR about hours and sick pay and next meeting date. No 'how are you?'

328  Saturday I was awake at 2 and 6am then back to sleep till 9am. We went into Worcester mid morning. I'm really struggling to leave the house, once I'm out I'm ok for a couple of hours, but when I need to go home, I just need to go.

329 Sunday Laylocks Garden Centre with work colleagues for breakfast from 10am till 1pm. Home and very unsettled. I went out again at 3pm for a coffee and to read my book. At 5pm I was in bed for an hours sleep. Watched TV, walked Bailey, bath and bed.

2024 Week 46 - One Daily Positive, Project 365 and A Selfie a Day.

I'm mentally exhausted. I'm tired of everything. Going over the same things. Crying. Feeling the same way, just all the sadness. It's been 7 weeks now since Stephanie died. Life sure does go on, it's just going on without me. I'll catch up, or I'll have missed some bits. I know it'll be ok, different from now on. I think the shock of her death has been processed now. I can accept it, I still can't believe it has happened, but I've accepted it. I just don't like it.

There's been a video call from a different friend every day since Stephanie died. I've met up with someone every day and there are many messages from friends on a daily basis also. Peter and I talk several times a day also. I'm not on my own and I have people I know I can call if I need to. But in general I just want to be on my own and just be. I find myself sitting for hours or walking Bailey, no tv, no phone, no book, just lost in thought, mostly not thinking about anything. It's much better than it has been. I've been in quite a dark place at times and have had excellent support from the Dr and several close friends and of course Peter.

316  Monday I met my old neighbour and friend in Ross. It was nice to meet up with a friend when the children were small, with someone who knew Stephanie as a child. I got home around 2pm and spent the afternoon and evening painting a dolls house. I sorted out some paperwork and sent off some forms about my pension and an investment. I popped out to a Bereavement group for a cup of tea and a natter at the top of our road. It was nice to meet up with a group of people who had some empathy for what I'm going through. I walked Bailey, bath and bed.

317  Tuesday I started the day hoovering and dusting. My twitter friends came up from Newport for the morning. They left around 1pm and I just sat quietly for the afternoon and set my alarm in case I napped, which I did. I walked Bailey to the retail park for a coffee. Home for a video call with Peter, then with child 2 and grandson. I had a bath, painted more of the dolls house, did some blogging and walked Bailey before bed.

318  Wednesday I drove over to West Malvern and a walk over the hills with Bailey. I raised the roof to air the van for a couple of hours. I took my book, I read and brewed a cuppa and had some soup for lunch. I then had a nap in the van.We stopped in town for a coffee and an ice cream sundae. Home to finish painting the dolls house then down the retail park for another coffee with my friend. Got ready for my first day back in work. A good day, I was able to take about Stephanie without crying and talk about work and other things. Went to bed with a stiff neck and a migraine.

319  Thursday Back to work just for the morning. Home to walk Bailey, she'd had a wee, then out out for my therapy session in the afternoon. I was stressed from work so I stopped for coffee. Home and straight out walking Bailey to the retail park.

320  Friday I struggled getting out the door for work today. By 11.30am I just want to go home. I'm starting to feel panicky. I had a meeting with HR. Told him that GP and therapist said they thought it was too early for me to return to work, that they'd suggested aphasia return, that I was struggling to leave the house, but OK once I was out, the next thing, he's suggested part time till Wednesday to be reviewed with the intention of increasing hours back to full time. I'd already discussed more with him than I felt comfortable with. I felt coerced. I left feeling very let down. I'd gone into the meeting led to believe it was a well being check not a back to work meeting plan. I sat at home for a couple of hours, after cleaning up after Bailey, unable to do anything, then took Bailey for a coffee and sat in silence. Home, dinner, painted more of the dolls house, bath, walked Bailey and bed.

321  Saturday Into Worcester with friends for a McDonald's breakfast and a mooch around the Range to look at Christmas. Left Bailey at home and it was a kid free morning. I love my friends (work mates) they've been an absolute life saver these past few weeks. Did a food shop and home early afternoon. Finished painting the dolls house and early evening, reassembled it and put it in the grandchildren's room. Tidied all the paint/brushes away.

322  Sunday My friend came up from South Wales for the day. Before she arrived, I'd reassembled the dolls house I'd been painting, mopped the kitchen, hoovered and walked Bailey to the coffee shop, read and returned home by 10am. My friend and I had tea, walked into town for another coffee, home had a late lunch and she left around 4pm. I got ready for work in the morning. My work friend called round for a cuppa. I had a bath, I watched I'm a celeb, walked Bailey and went to bed.

15th - 17th November 2024 Post Comment Love

Welcome back to #PoCoLo with Stephanie from Bosworth.Life and I.

Post Comment Love #PoCoLo is a friendly weekly linky where you can link up any blog post you've written this week. If you're new or a regular visitor we're sure you'll find something of interest.

I know a lot of people just come here to link up or 'dump and run' and it's easy to focus on those who do just that and complain about, but over the past few weeks, I've realised that too much time has been taken up on the negativity and the disappointment of the people whose absence has been greatly noticed when we have been at the lowest point of our lives with the death of our daughter.

We've been focusing so much on the people who should have been here, noticed by the lack of calls, messages, visits, that we've been angry and it's taken away the focus from what has really mattered, Stephanie. In a way it has helped us cope with her death. We've had anger, but it's not been focused at her, at the medical professionals for letting her die. We know there was nothing that could've been done.

We haven't allowed the absence of others to take away our appreciation of those who have actually been here and we can never thank those people enough and I truly hope that we never have to repay their kindness, although I know sadly in some way there will be a time when we will, some we have already been there for.

So if I leave 10+ comments a week and share 10+ posts from this Linky and only receive 2+ comments back, then who cares. I have 2+ comments from people who value me, 2+ people who have taken the time to connect with me, share just more than a link. They've shared their time and their thoughts and that's how friendship grows, both online and in the real world.

A lot of healing has started this week. I've had time on my own to just be.

We'd also appreciate your help spreading the #PoCoLo word on Twitter, tag us and we'll RT. You can find us on twitter here: Stephanie - @BosworthLife and Suzanne - @ChickenRuby

Is blogging useful anymore?

I know it is for me. But is it useful for anyone else these days?

I started on Social media in the days when social media was just starting out.

In the days when you could ask a question on twitter, didn't need a hashtag to start a conversation and met people far and wide with the same interests as you almost immediately and actually made friends, you socialised, shared happy and sad events both online and eventually in real life.

Oh those were the days.

Blogging events, days out, support networks, opened your heart, shared tragic events, reached out, celebrated milestones and received love, support and understanding.

Nowadays it's all adverts, self promotion and pure hatred in some cases.

I used to churn out 2-3 posts a week. Sharing posts about raising a family, life with teens, schooling, discipline. I'd actively seek others in similar situations, avidly read their posts, look for tips and support. I'd joining with blog linkies, read and comment and know I wasn't alone as a parent.

Then we became expats and life changed and I wrote about life abroad, loneliness, isolation, new adventures, travel, charity work and volunteering. My interests changed as the children grew up and left home. I took up photography with an interest in construction when we moved to Dubai and documenting the ever changing skyline. I grew vegetables in the sand, we called our garden. I blogged about international travel and relocating pets. I talked about grief, about health, becoming grandparents, being a landlord and finally about repatriation.

And now I don't feel I've anything left to talk about. Why? Because social media has got so big, it's just about all covered now. A hashtag is meaningless these days. There are a million and one 'how to guides' no one needs to know how to pack a suitcase, survive the menopause, or read a 1000 word review about a back pack.

So is there anything left to blog about? or has blogging had it's day?

For me, I've always blogged for my sanity and the occasional sponsored post. It kept me sane for 12 years as an expat. It documented our lives abroad. Our lives were different, it was interesting for others to read, it wasn't necessarily better, it was just different. It was interesting for our friends in South Africa to hear our take on their country as foreigners, how we experienced things they took as being the norm, things they took for granted, that were different for us on a visitors visa. Like obtaining a drivers permit for our son, or getting utilities set up, opening bank accounts. Our family and friends were fascinated with our travels in South Africa, the photos of Safaris, the extraordinary houses we lived in, the charity work I did. But as the sun always shone they weren't always interested in the struggles we had or understanding of the difficulties we faced or the fear we lived under from time to time.

Dubai was utopia for all. We were lucky, but it still fascinated people. It wasn't restrictive for me like many people thought, but you couldn't convince them. We were also living the dream, so how could I not be happy 24/7?

But has any of it been useful to anyone else?

There have been blog post about relocating where people have contacted me to ask for further information about moving their pets to another country, about choosing shipping containers, working abroad, visa applications and lots of enquires during covid when I was travelling between Dubai and the UK, know where I was getting my testing done and how to obtain permission to fly. But now 3 years on, that information is no longer valid because so much has changed. It was relevant at the time and was useful to others.

Now I'm just going to work, sharing pictures of DIY around the home and garden, pictures of trips in the camper van, talking about my health, visits with the grandchildren and holidays.

I'm still documenting my life. I share with Project 365, a photo a day and a weekly diary and I co run a weekly Linky called #PoCoLo. But I'm no longer writing anything that may be of interest to others, nothing that may help or inspire other people. I'm only writing for me and maybe the grandchildren who may or may not read these posts long after I've gone and have a fantastic legacy of what life was really like for their grandparents from 2009 onwards.

A few weeks ago I wrote a post about dealing with grief and moving on, it was scheduled to go out on Monday. There was a nagging feeling that something was going to happen. I'd shared this feeling with Peter and a friend. I was frightened to go home. I was frightened to go out. I was eating or sleeping. I was losing weight. I had a head ache. I was encouraged to write it all done and go and see the Doctor. Even I knew it wasn't right.

I didn't go to the Doctor but I wrote it all down, I felt better. I really did feel better. I'd let go. I was talking. I had 2 weeks where I felt lighter.

Then the absolute worst happened. Our daughter died. I carried on talking and writing. I've had a couple of what I suppose other people would call 'break downs' over the past few weeks in response to 'you're the bravest person I know' 'if anyone can do this, you can Suzanne' when I've replied with 'no I'm not brave' you've just justified that as your excuse for leaving me to sort everything out. I'm not everybody's everything. I'm not everyone's go to person. I'm the one who gets things done because I'm usually the one who takes their tears away, the lack of tears is often seen as lack of emotion, but for me it's sheer shock and stunned silence. I'm not afraid of crying. I've cried this week until the tears don't come anymore, I'm not frightened of crying. I've cried in the coffee shop, I've cried in front of friends, I've cried in the photo shop, at the hospital, at the neighbours, to the cat, with my work colleagues who have visited, anyone who has shown me the slightest bit of care and concern, anyone who genuinely has looked at me and without a word has conveyed 'oh Suzanne, I just don't know what to say'

There is nothing to say. We've received so many kind words this week, phone calls and visits, along with flowers and cards and a food parcel from my amazing colleagues in work. Invites for coffees for a change of scenery, to be able to talk about Stephanie. Chats on the street with the neighbours who have met her and known us since me moved here in 2002, despite us moving away for 12 years and coming back.

It may feel like a strange thing to be blogging and laying everything out for all to read, but for me writing everything down has always been easier than saying things out loud. There are times I haven't been able to speak, to find the words, but they've been there in my head and the frustration at not being able to get them out has made me so angry.

I found writing the eulogy of Stephanie's life so cathartic. It was easy, there was so much to say and once I started it just flowed from the start to the end. I asked one of her brothers for some input at one point as I wanted to makes sure their words were heard, as she was their lives also.

Sometimes looking back and reflecting triggers memories I'd buried and it is painful, but over time it makes it easier, it helps to see how far we've come individually and as a family.

The night Stephanie died will be etched in our memories forever, the emotions and the feelings, the last touch, look, words. The actual timings, order of things and the process will be lost forever, the order of events will change in our minds. But it is recorded in messages that after the initial calls made to our sons and Peters sister, it became impossible to speak, the words were too hard and a serious of cut and paste messages followed, which we then used for days to tell extended family and friends.

Friends in the real world and online who have lost a child themselves, who have lost a child in the past few weeks. I've been posting photos on instagram, it has helped me. Peter has read through the responses. I'd say only 10% of the people who have commented were physical friends first, and maybe 50% have become real life friends with Peter having met many of them. Blogger friends who have met Stephanie, people who know Stephanie through the power of social media and my endless battle with clean and tidy disabled toilets.

I've continued to blog since Stephanie died, to record our journey as we grieve. To record the happy moments, which are becoming more frequent. How the sadder moments, physically hurt less. how we are learning to cope and deal with those moments. The grief of missing her isn't less, it's just recognising when it is approaching, being able to stop and pause and accept it, take a deep breath and allow it come, rather than fighting it off, trying to push it away.

There's so much more to be said about Stephanie, about my grief, but that is for separate posts.

2024 Week 45 - One Daily Positive, Project 365 and A Selfie a Day.

I've a list as long as my arm and it frightens me. Actually I have two lists, a fun one which is painting, Christmas decorations, etc, the second list is things like pension, boiler service, car windscreen repair and other stuff that has to be done. The second list frightens me. I hate doing things like this, it stresses me out.

Everything causes me stress these days, always has. I'm not good at stuff like this, just because I get these things done, doesn't mean I'm good at it. I hate having dates and times in the diary. I hate having to think about a million and one other things. I keep thinking about going back to work, then panic about being back in the last place where things were normal before Stephanie died. I hate Monday mornings, I hate going to sleep at night, waking in the morning, knowing Stephanie has died and going through all those emotions again. I start therapy on Thursday. I'm seeing the GP. In between I'm functioning.

309  Monday I spent the night on the sofa due to Bailey barking and whining. Decided it would be best for her to spend more time getting used to the crate, she's obviously missing the other dog, Molly, so while she's in the crate during the day, I'm ignoring her but sitting in the same room, leaving her alone for longer periods of time while I pop out the room to watch a bit of tv, put the kettle on etc. Peter did some ironing then we headed up the hills and into town for a coffee. Bailey is loving the all the walking. Evening spent in front of the TV and Peter packed for his trip away.

310  Tuesday Peter left at 9.15am for his train to the airport. Bailey and I walked home and I had a call with a therapist to make a plan for helping me comes to terms with Stephanie's death and process unfinished issues around my father's sudden death also back in 2017. In the afternoon I got all the Christmas decorations down so I could start to clear out the loft room and finally get rid of some of the stuff of my father's I'd been hoarding (meaning to sort and sell) I ended up putting up the Christmas trees and sorting through the decorations. Bailey and I walked to the coffee shop to meet friends.

311  Wednesday Early start and a walk. Home to finish putting up the Christmas decorations. Early evening walk to the retail park to meet a friend after work, tea, TV. I tided up the lounge and put the boxes away, another dog walk, bath and bed.

312  Thursday A Dog walk, then some tidying up of the house, dog bed washing, tidied up the crate, decorated the dining room table, fiddled around with broken fairy lights, sorted through paperwork, then into Ledbury for coffee and to my first appointment for therapy to untangle an awful lot of trauma, stress and anxiety that has been overloading me for many years. It's going to be a long journey, but already I know I should've done this a long time ago. Home, tea, dog walk, bath, TV and bed.

313  Friday Quick dog walk, off to Newent garden centre to meet my friend with Bailey. Afternoon spent pottering around tidying things up. I took Bailey out for a longer walk early evening, tea, bath and before bed Bailey and I went for a shorter walk around the block in an effort to see if we can stop the night time pooping.

Peter promised me after Stephanie died he'd be more patient with me with photos.

314  Saturday Started the day with a coffee and breakfast at home, just chilling out. I sorted through some birthday cards and Christmas gifts and put a summer plant in the shed along with the sun umbrella and popped to Morrisons to do a food shop. Bailey and I walked to the retail park to meet my friend, Mel for coffee. Two other friends happened to be there with their families so we all joined up and spent almost 2 hours together, it was lovely just to chat about other things. Walked home, had an early dinner, watched TV, paid two more of Stephanie's bills from her estate. Had a bath, walked Bailey and in bed by 10pm.

315  Sunday I got the dolls house out the attic and sort out the paint I needed. Had a call with my friends in Germany, then caught the train into Worcester with Bailey for Remembrance Sunday and then met up with my friend for a coffee. We bumped into another friend. Home to drop off Bailey then into town to pick up a bit of shopping. I managed two layers of paint on the dolls house, wrapped up a couple of Christmas gifts, watched Nanny McPhee 2, had a bath, watched more TV, walked Bailey and bed.

October 2024 - Days out in the Campervan

We'd booked the half term holidays before our daughter died and I'm glad now we had. At first I just wanted to cancel everything. Our friends tentatively skirted around their upcoming visit, but we said, please come.

We ended up spending a lot of time in the van back and forth to Gloucester to sort out our daughter's affairs. It's a 50 mile round trip and we had 4 airport runs in a week with Gatwick and Birmingham. We shared the driving and it was great to be able to stretch out on the back seats.

During half term I had intended to spend 2 nights in the van in the Forest of Dean visiting family and friends, dropping off Halloween gifts and catching up with everyone. I still did the visits, but over 2 days instead of 3 and I slept at my friends house rather than 2 nights on a camp site. In needed the company rather than the solitude as I'd been off work for some time.

Our Friends visited from Germany for a couple of days and we had a few days out.

Then we headed for 4 days to visit our Grandson.

We brought one of sons dogs back with us as our son is away and with a 3 year old and an older dog, it was getting a bit much with the dark, wet and cold mornings and to be honest it is going to big a big help to us to have have something to look after till the middle of December when our son gets home, especially as Peter is away for 3 weeks. I'm looking forward to long early morning walks. I do miss having Bob around and our son and his wife helped us out with our dog many times during covid having him for several months so I could return to Dubai before we returned to the UK full time.

I'm pleased to report the cat and dog are getting on even if it is on the cat's terms and we're both wary of the cat, as there is still a lot of hissing from her. Bailey has been told it's her own fault as she will insist on following her.

8th - 10th November 2024 Post Comment Love

Welcome back to #PoCoLo with Stephanie from Bosworth.Life and I.

Post Comment Love #PoCoLo is a friendly weekly linky where you can link up any blog post you've written this week. If you're new or a regular visitor we're sure you'll find something of interest.

I'm taking some time for myself, just to be in the moment. I crave time on my own. Peter is away in Turkey with a friend. I have my son's dog for company and I'm still off work on bereavement leave.

We had so much booked and planned between October and the end of the year. We're usually last minute people due to Peter's job and it's taken almost 3 years for me to break the habit of him leaving everything till last minute to book now he's not working. He says it's me, but I've spent years waiting for him to confirm dates for meetings, business trips etc.All his work travel was booked last minute. I have set school holidays, there's no need to wait, so with a bit of persuasion I've managed to drag him round to my way of doing things. As a consequence with our daughter dying last month, we now find ourselves with things booked that at the time we just wanted to cancel, then a few weeks later wondering should we be doing them, now accepting that indeed, life does go on and our grief is with us regardless of where we are or what we are doing. We can be happy, there's no guilt to be had for doing something nice for ourselves.

Stephanie was our daughter, it is our grief and in the absence of family (adult children excluded, they lost their sister) we have to get on with it, just the two of us and find our own way to deal with her death.

We'd also appreciate your help spreading the #PoCoLo word on Twitter, tag us and we'll RT. You can find us on twitter here: Stephanie - @BosworthLife and Suzanne - @ChickenRuby

I'll be catching up with reading your posts, sharing and commenting over the next few days.

My Garden in October 2024

My husband has done some great work in the garden but he's not the best at tidying up when he's finished a job.

I've been busy putting things away.

Cleaning things up ready to move to the tip.

Finding a home for the wheelbarrow.

Picking up stray gloves.

Tidying up the wood pile.

And gaining access down the side of the house.

Drying out the off cuts of wood.

And burning them in the fire pit.

The back garden is almost finished.

Just the wagon wheel to be mounted on bricks for the herb garden and the fir tree to be dug up and the new path to be laid.

The washing pole to be moved.

The succulents have been moved under cover and the winter boots are ready to be worn.

The bougainvillea has been repotted with a mixture of sand and compost, ready to be brought inside for the winter.

The more delicate plants and herbs have been put undercover.

The garden cushions have been stored for winter.

The Bay tree is waiting to be fleeced.

The last of the tomatoes have been picked to ripen on the window sill.

And the undercover area has been made ready for winter evenings and early mornings, for drinking tea, reading and still being able to enjoy the outdoors, whilst keeping warm and dry.
We planted some Angel Wing tulips with my granddaughter gifted to us by a friend after our daughter died.

'There you go Aunty Stephanie, stay hydrated'
