Week 31 2023 One Daily Positive and Project 365. A week in the Whitsundays

We spent the week in Airlie a small town near the Whitsunday Islands, we booked a couple of boat trips, but our aim was to read, chill and relax. If I'm to be totally honest the Whitsundays aren't as glamorous as the travel programmes make them out to be, whilst the beaches are beautiful white sand, they are filled with tourists and helicopters and the sea may be turquoise but all you see when you look out to it is boats and cruise liners in the distance with boasts running cruise tourists back and forth. It was also sadly here that a military helicopter crashed this week, killing all 4 occupants.

212 Sunday Last day in and around Melbourne, a leisurely drive stopping at places on the way to Melbourne to return the car hire and spend our last night at the airport before flying to The Whitsunday Islands for a week at the Great Barrier Reef.

Last look at The Great Ocean Road.

213 Monday Up early and flight to Prosperine for our stay in the Whitsundays. The plane approached the airport down a valley with a sharp turn to the runway where we were just above the trees, level with the hillside. We arrived at 10.25am transferred by coach to the resort. Had coffee and lunch and visited the laundrette to get our laundry done, check in was at 3pm. Unpacked then off to local shops to buy breakfast and snacks for the week. Evening spent watching TV and reading.

214 Tuesday Woke around 8am, had breakfast and walked into town for coffee, explored the area and booked trips for Whitehaven Beach and the Great Barrier Reef. Back to the apartment mid afternoon, had a nap, then wandered into town for a coffee. Evening spent watching the football and reading.

215 Wednesday Day We went on a boat trip to Whitehaven Beach. I normally get seasick on boats and many a great day out has left me lying down on the lower deck. This time I was fine and the sea when we got into the open was so rough that the boat was literally flying off the waves and our feet left the deck, We saw a humpback whale and it's calf and several dolphins. We got caught in a torrential rain storm when we took the walking back to the view point, but it was fun.

216 Thursday Day spent wandering around the shops, reading on the beach and easting and drinking. Evening spent catching up with blog post commenting and scheduling.

% minute walk to the beach. No one mentioned the hill to get back to the apartment.

217 Friday Took a walk along the boardwalk to the next village, not really that, just a collection of beach shops and cafes, but lovely. We stopped for lunch and spent time along the way stopping to read our books. On the way back we got caught in a torrential downpour so settled down under a covered bench to read some more. Afternoon spent sleeping then out to see the fireworks on the beach for the Reef festival. We video called our DIL and grandchild to share the fireworks with them.

Our noisy and nosey neighbour.

218 Saturday A lazy morning, reading and blogging then a walk along the coast to the other bay. Torrential wind and rain kept us in the apartment. By 3pm the sun came out, so we sat on the balcony and went down into town for a meal.

  1. That's a shame that the Whitsundays is not that glamourous. It still sounds like you had a lovely week and your photos are beautiful. The boat trip sounds fantastic. x

    1. It certainly is a stunning place, just a bit too over commercialised for my liking

  3. Beautiful view of the Great Ocean Road. The Whitsundays look beautiful even if they aren’t quite as glamorous as the brochure promised. How lovely to see a humpback whale and dolphins and glad you weren’t seasick even though the sea was so rough. Looks like you’re having a lovely time away. #project365
