One Daily Positive - Week 21 South Africa to Dubai

I've been very sad and can't stop thinking about the death of a long term twitter friend, Spencer. @sahdandproud @adadcalledspen and @spencerpeegee I first met him at Britmums in 2013 and sat with him at the award ceremony when he won best writer. Our last twitter conversation was in February, but as with all things twitter, tweeters are always there and when they die, they are missed. I just can't imagine what he was going through and what his family are going through now.

When we moved from South Africa to Dubai it was winter here and summer there and the temperatures pretty much the same. I loved my freedom for the first time in 4 years. I could catch a bus, train, walk and just explore without any fear for my personal safety. Then summer came and I was restricted to an indoor life under the air con, with sitting outside impossible and I realise now that I'm back in South Africa that my quality of life in regards to what I can do and the friends I have here and the opportunities to go on safari, walk the dog, sit in parks, enjoy the garden is far greater.

The weather has been much cooler in Dubai than I'd expected, still limited with my activities due to Ramadan, but surprised with how much time we've spent in the garden.

139 Sunday Awake most of the night with Bush babies scrambling over the tin roof. A friend joined us and we headed off to Dinokeng in search of the Big 5. We saw only giraffe, antelope and warthog, but spent 4 hours in a lodge by a waterhole eating, drinking and talking.

140 Monday Out to meet a friend for coffee and a catch up, it's been a while. Visited the Botanical Gardens in Pretoria, made a wrong turn and had a nerve wracking drive through the city centre. Traffic is worse there than in Dubai.

141 Tuesday Off for a drive around our old neighbourhood, nothing has changed, had a long lunch with my friend who I'm staying with and spent the evening washing teddy bears and drinking wine in the garden.

142 Wednesday Popped out for coffee and a last minute drop off at the storage unit. Said my goodbyes to the family I've been staying with, collected by another friend and taken to the airport for my night flight back to Dubai.
I have to pay to wrap my suit case on advice from the airlines to stop items being stolen between it's journey from check in to the plane.

143 Thursday An uneventful, but full flight, with a bit of sleep. Back home by 8am, unpacked, showered and had a nap, went out for coffee and a food shop. Started repacking my case for the next trip in June.
Back home and a view from the balcony

144 Friday We went out for a coffee mid morning and did some more food shopping. Lazy afternoon and then out for dinner with Peter's work colleagues and a few drinks.

145 Saturday A lazy morning and a trip to the cinema to see the Ted Bundy movie. I know the story very well, I have an interest in serial killers and psychopaths. Zac Efron's acting was fantastic, there's no gore or violence, it focus's on his girlfriend at the time of the crimes and tells the story of the prosecution. Watched Newport County play football, had a BBQ and an early night.

I've been tweeting from @wearexpats account this week and until Monday at 11am. each week there is a new host giving an insight into expat life abroad. I've met some really interesting people.

Rape Care Kits for women for when they get raped - the reality of life in South Africa.

I sent post cards this week. The woman at the counter said delivery time was 3-10 days, from experience it's more likely to be years, if at all. Keeping in touch as an expat.

One Daily Positive - Week 50 Leaving South Africa and mum comes to Dubai

With me flying home on the 10th and arriving on the 11th and mum flying over on the 11th and arriving on the 12th, I've got a little confused with what is actually going on.

An emotional week, I really didn't want to leave South Africa, it was the first time Peter and I had been back there together since we left 4 years ago next week. It is also my first Christmas with my mum for 9 years. She came to Dubai in December 2016 for 2 weeks but couldn't leave my dad for Christmas itself.

343 Sunday We went on a safari drive after breakfast. Didn't see any of the Big 5 (Lion, Elephant, Rhino, Cape Buffalo and Leopard) but we did see plenty of Giraffe, Zebras, Impala and a Jackal, only the 2nd time I've seen one of those. We lazed around in the afternoon, there was an amazing thunder storm and in the evening we went out to another lodge to eat as the restaurant where we were staying closed at 5pm and they didn't think to tell us until 3pm.

344 Monday Left before breakfast, called in at my friend to collect my police clearance certificate I'd being trying to get processed for 4 years. We spent the day at the Mall of Africa, had lunch and called in at Peter's old office on the way to the airport. A night flight, didn't get much sleep. Peter is staying on for a week, delivering a training course and seeing friends on the weekend.

345 Tuesday I got home at 7am, I had a bath and went to bed for an hour and slept, unpacked, washed, did a food shop, had coffee out and cleaned the house through for Mum's visit. Caught up with TV recordings, lazed around and left for the airport at midnight to collect my mum. Was pleased to see how well the new grass is growing.

346 Wednesday Mum was up early and we collected the cat and dog from boarding and dropped off a couple of gifts, grabbing a coffee on our way. A lazy afternoon and pub quiz in the evening.
Mum arrived at 1.30am, looking fresh and relaxed.

347 Thursday Took mum to the Marina Mall, she has lost her bearings, on her last visit we were the other side of the city. We ran out of gas so had beans on toast for dinner and walked Bob round the estate. I was in bed and asleep by 8pm (4pm UK time)

348 Friday Up early to walk Bob as he's had a dodgy tummy after having a bone 2 days ago and has had a few accidents in the house. We then went to Oasis Mall for some shopping, coffee and to look at the Christmas decorations. Home late afternoon, watched TV, had dinner and walked Bob again. Mum has no concept of the size of the mall she is in and is insisting the Christmas tree is small.

349 Saturday Went to the beach in the morning and Ibn Battuta Mall in the afternoon, had a lazy evening watching Christmas movies.

Day Safari at Kruger National Park

Two weeks ago I was in South Africa for 8 days, my friend and I visited another friend in Nelspruit, a 3 hour drive north of Pretoria and she took us into Kruger for a day drive about another hour from where she lived.

It's worth noting that with the school holidays, you should book in advance as they limit the number of visitors to the park.

We entered at Malelane Gate, the nearest entrance, drove up the H3 to Skukuza rest stop near the Paul Kruger Gate, where we had lunch and visited the souvenir shop, then exited the park on the H4 at Crocodile Bridge, approximately 150kms.

The gate closes at 6pm and the time differs throughout the year, you are fined if you are late back to the gate. The speed limit also varies and is monitored by radar.

We saw 4 of the Big 5, Elephant, Rhino, Buffalo, Lion but sadly no Leopard, as well as many other animals and birds and quite a few stupid drivers, blocking the road to follow the Lion, leaning out of an open window to take a photo of the Lion and 2 large 4x4's that blocked the road between a Mother and a baby elephant, as they filmed the elephant in distress, we got out of there as quick as we could, rather than wait for Daddy elephant to come.

Week 27 - One Daily Positive and Project 366 Dubai to South Africa

I'm late with posting this week as I've been in South Africa visiting friends for just over a week, I didn't have enough time to do everything on my list but I did manage to see most people and a few extra. I also went on a road trip with my friends and spent a day in Kruger National park, where we saw 4 of the Big 5. Elephant, Buffalo, Rhino and Lion, sadly no Leopard on this trip.

Blogging has taken a back seat and all I have for you this week is Photalife Buildings (week 26) and My Sunday Photo (week 79) According to staff at OR Tambo in Johannesburg, I'd over filled my bag, causing it to split. But if you look at the picture you'll see my bag has been run over for sure, as this and several other damaged items were packed in the middle of the case.
