Shopping for gifts back home - Review

As an expat living so far from my family in the UK, it is difficult to know what to buy my 4 year old niece for birthdays and Christmas, she grows so fast and as a Mother to 4 adult boys I have absolutely no idea what she has a preference for, other than she would like to be a Princess when she grows up.

She starts school in September and on being shown her new uniform she burst into tears stating 'but it isn't pink' bless, she was thinking she could wear one of her many Princess dresses to school as she does currently to nursery.

It was lovely this evening, despite the distance to be able to look at toys online together to choose a little gift from her Aunty to cheer her up. The Disney Princess range is extensive with toys starting at as little as AED 10.

Registering with the Toy Store was quick and easy and as a new customer I received 20% off my first order (see T&Cs)

With orders being dispatched within 24 hours with an estimated 3-4 day delivery, it is great to know that the gift will arrive quicker than the normal postal service of 2-3 weeks for the same cost as the delivery charge.

I’ve asked my niece to put together a little list for me to choose from for Christmas as I usually purchase and deliver gifts when I visit the UK around mid September. By buying them online I can purchase the latest Disney Princess range for my niece with just a click.

And with an additional wrapping and message service, at no extra charge, I will definitely be using the Toy Store again.

What can I take into Canada? Luggage and Travel insurance

I'm off to Canada tomorrow for 3 weeks, staying with Catherine Burden, my twitter buddy and penal for the past 5 years, supporting me, through friendship, from my move from the UK to South Africa and now to Dubai.

I'm not providing any links for this post as carry on and checked in luggage restrictions and customs clearance do vary from airline to airline and airports. I'd hate to provide information that is updated by the time someone clicks on the link.

I'm flying with Emirates and have a rather generous luggage allowance of 2 x 23kg suitcases, cabin bag and handbag. I am not used to packing a 23kg suitcase, as my normal routes are usually 1 x 30kg and as an expat I value the additional 7kg allowances, especially when I travel with documents and gifts for family back home. Without all the additional items, I was able to pack a 23kg case with ease, which includes gifts for Catherine and family, wash bag (I usually purchase these items on arrival to allow for extra weight) walking shoes, suitable clothing for camping and kayaking, rain wear (which I'm looking forward to) and birthday presents that I've been given to open during my stay. I will have plenty of room to bring back gifts and I can always check in my hand luggage case if necessary as I've packed a large handbag I could use for carry on.
Following airline regulations I've packed tweezers, nail scissors and other sharp items in the front pocket of my checked in luggage.

My case is by the door, I'm checked in and I've even selected my clothes for the morning. The rest of my pre flight/travel time will be spent, as always, watching Air Crash investigations and Border Control (Canada)

Hubby has a copy of Catherine's address and full names of family members and phone numbers. My gifts include food and wooded materials from the UK, South Africa and Dubai.

I fly alone, I a single, 43 year old woman, travelling from the Middle East/Africa, with multiple entry exit stamps, current and 2 expired visas in my passport. I get stopped, searched, swabbed on every flight I take, every time. I must match a profile.

Having watched Border Control Canada, I've realised I'm ideal for stopping at the border.

I will be issued with a Declaration Form and I will tick to declare the food and wooden gifts, sea shells and tea. They are all permitted goods, there is also a restriction to weight, but I have to declare them or I could face them being confiscated and issued with a fine. I am allowed to take in 200 cigarettes and either 1.5 litres of wine or 1.1 litres of alcohol, duty free.

I don't need a visa to visit Canada as I'm British, my only concern is my return trip as my visa is for residency and not work, several times I've been questioned as to whether I'm allowed to travel on my own and what my intentions are on arrival and why I'm not starting or ending my journey in the UK.

Our medical insurance in South Africa covered us for trips abroad, including to the UK, technically we are not entitled to NHS services as expats and have been out of the UK for 5 years, we don't pay taxes. (we fill in a self assessment tax return form every year though) Our actual travel in regards to delays, cancellations etc is covered by our credit card. So this year I actually had to purchase travel insurance and it was a mine field. There was the time hubby and I went to Las Vegas for a week and 'forgot' to purchase any insurance, so it's an area we've now planned with care.

It's very easy to select the cheapest option, but you really need to take care, especially if you know what activities you'll be taking part in.

For example Catherine is taking me camping, we will be travelling to the camp site via the water, in a kayak. The basic travel insurance does NOT cover me for kayaking/canoeing unless with a qualified instructor and in an organised group....who would've thought eh? I've purchased annual insurance Worldwide to include Canada and the USA. I will be spending 30 days in South Africa later this year and have another trip planned to the UK. I'm also hoping I'll be travelling with hubby to Turkey and we'll be off to Oman for a visa run when the youngest son visits in July.

It's worth noting that most travel insurance covers you for 21 days per trip on an annual policy, so I made sure the policy I purchased covered me for multiple trips up to 31 days and worldwide included Canada and the USA.

I will get my money worth's from the insurance though, touch wood I've never lost a case, but hubby and the kids have had theirs delayed and/or items missing and cases damaged on arrival. Hubby has required emergency medical care outside his country of residence, but as he travels with his employers this is covered for him automatically. I, however, have an excess to pay for none emergency's.

My last 2 things to do are:

Email Catherine a copy of my Insurance.
I always insist our visitors give me a copy of theirs, who knows if I had a serious accident how costs would be covered in the interim period if Catherine was unaware of who I was insured with. Although medical care is free in Canada, I'm not Canadian.

Call the banks.
They need to know I am travelling overseas and will be using both my UAE and UK banking cards.

Week 24 - My Sunday Photo

I'm off to Canada on Wednesday, I may have mentioned this once or twice on social media the past few weeks.

I've also mentioned before how Sunday in Dubai is the start of the working week and how I get confused with what day it is without a job or school timetable to go by. But it's been even more complicated this week with hubby returning from the States on Friday evening after travelling for 26 hours and his body clock still being 9 hours behind.

As I'm going to be in Canada for my birthday (did I mention I'm going to Canada?) and hubby being on his own for Father's Day (well he'll be in work) and with hubby actually being awake at dinner time we decided to pop out to our favourite restaurant to celebrate both occasions.

Week 24 - Project 365

Last week ended with me being in agony again, I haven't had physio all week as he was full up and not even a cancellation in sight. I did quite a bit of driving as it was far too hot to be out walking and I spent Sunday cleaning the house, which involved moving furniture and making beds. However the week got much better on Monday, after coffee with friends and my 20yo son arriving after a week in South Africa on his way back to the UK. It was lovely to see him and hear about his new life in the army.
We went out on the Dhow Cruise for dinner on Tuesday, Wednesday we went out for lunch and a spot of shopping, spent a couple of hours on the beach and out for dinner in the evening, then on the beach. Thursday after my physio we caught the bus to Dubai Mall, more shopping followed by a late lunch/early dinner. I had another long drive into the desert on Friday then it was off to the airport to see him off, there were a few tears, mainly mine, but I'll see him again in September in the UK for his passing out parade.

I had a couple of hours at home to wash the bedding, clean the bathroom and then it was back to the airport to collect hubby who had been in the States for 2 weeks with work. Saturday we were back out in the desert walking Bob with a group of lovely people. I'm itching to pack my suitcase  as on Wednesday I'm off to Canada to meet a twitter buddy for 3 weeks. But hubby has just returned from the States and the case is still full of his stuff.

Day 158 #onedailypositive #forgotten #fmsphotoaday #butterfly #snaphappybritmums #project365

I've forgotten what it is like to be me.

I feel like I'm in a chrysalis, hiding away from the real world. My world is one where my children have a better future, where my husband has a career that takes him all over the world. Where my family have their lives that I am now isolated from.

For 5 years as an expat I have been cocooned away from the 'real world' one of work, responsibilities and opportunities. I am just here, resting on the outside, while inside I'm a hive of activity, wondering what my future will bring.

I'm waiting to be released, flap my wings and fly.

It is with great sadness that I blow yet another myth about life in Dubai. I can drive, eat pork, wear a swim suit, work, celebrate Christmas and Easter and I don't have to cover my face and body when I go out. These assumptions are made regularly and I also get asked if it's hot enough to cook an egg. So I had a go. The answer is no, this was 1pm, the fire pit had been exposed to the sun since 7am and was too hot to touch, but it wouldn't cook an egg.

Day 160 #onedailypositive #disgust #fmsphotoaday #SpringClean #snaphappybritmums #project365

Meet the dust bunnies, I think they're going to be featuring quite a lot in my life, I might have to give them all names but then I won't be able to bin them if they have names. I am disgust(ed) by the thought of ever having a carpet again. I did a full spring clean on Sunday. With the cat and dog and the air con on, it doesn't take long for all this to build up again.

Day 161 ‪#‎onedailypositive‬ ‪#‎anger‬ ‪#‎fmsphotoaday‬ ‪#‎cake‬‪#‎snaphappybritmums‬ ‪#‎project365‬

I am angry I forgot all about today's photo prompt and I didn't get to eat cake. I am angry that as I live as an expat I miss my adult children's and family birthdays and other events. But I didn't miss my niece's wedding back in April this year so I'm showcasing the cake my talented sister baked and decorated for her daughters big day.

Day 162 #onedailypositive #fear #fmsphotoaday #8pm #snaphappybritmums #project365

I fear missing out on news from one of the many places we have family and friends, by getting confused with the time difference. Hubby is on a flight to New York on his way back to Duabi which I'm trying to track and son is flying back from Dubai to the UK tomorrow and on Wednesday I fly to Canada for 3 weeks. hopefully this will help me remember when to Skype/phone and not wake anyone up.

Day 163 ‪#‎onedailypositive‬ ‪#‎joy‬ ‪#‎fmsphotoaday‬ ‪#‎yellow‬‪#‎snaphappybritmums‬ ‪#‎project365‬

All day I've been looking for yellow. I'm sitting on the patio, there's a mop with a yellow handle, it's been used today. The laundry basket is yellow, it too has been used today. I bought a burger from Hardee's drive through it has a yellow smiley face for a logo. I saw a yellow Ferrari, I've been out in the desert and just returned from the beach. Sand is yellow, right? But I didn't take any photos, I was busy looking for yellow. Then I realised as I sat down to drink my tea and search for something yellow that brought me joy, I realised, my tea mug is yellow and I'm wearing yellow flip flops. Why has today been so full of joy? Well my son came into the desert with me on his last day of vacation to take his dog for a walk and play in the lakes, he won't see Bob again for maybe a year, but they both had so much fun. And how can a mop and laundry basket bring joy? Hubby flys back to Dubai tonight after 2 weeks away. The house is clean, there are fresh sheets on the bed and it means we can just chill out for the weekend.

Day 164 #onedailypositive #OnMyMind #fmsphotoaday #feet #snaphappybritmums #project365

Can you believe with as much international and local travel that hubby and I do, we only have one suitcase between us? I mean just the one. A handle broke on his, then my zip went so we bought a new one.
Just think the average suitcase probably makes one return flight a year, maybe a coach trip and often a car journey. Since getting our new suitcase it has travelled from the UK to Dubai, been to South Africa and Turkey twice, made a return trip to the UK, has just returned from America and on Wednesday it is heading off with me to Canada. It's next trip after that will be to the UK, but with both of us flying we'll need to invest in another one. Not only does the suit case travel miles on a plane, it also travels quite some distance on it's wheels, which means our feet are also covering quite some ground. I usually travel in sensible footwear, as when I reach my destination I have buses and trains to catch and you know how much walking is involved getting across London even when you use public transport. But for this trip to Canada I'm being collected at the airport so I'm wearing these for a bit of fun.

Creating a garden in the desert - a visit to the garden centre

I only have a couple of photos of the garden centre as I was told off for taking photos. However I can report that a garden centre in Dubai is very similar to those in the UK and as a matter of fact the same as South Africa.

There's the standard cafe, pots, tools, a selection of gifts, clothing and this particular garden centre featured a bike and a book shop as well as the plants and seeds and garden ornaments. You cannot buy fertilisers or weed killer in Dubai, when you ask you're told to go to Satwa, which is an area of Dubai, but no one tells you where or which shop so I'm doing without.

It's too hot in Dubai, even when the sun sets, the temperature only drops to around 31c and it's still too hot to sit outside for any length of time to actually enjoy the garden, so I thought I should bring the garden inside. I was looking for herbs and strawberry plants, as I'm finding it difficult to grow from seed, but I've been informed as it's summer now, they're out of season.
I spent 4 years in the southern hemisphere where the seasons are opposite to the UK, but there were only really 2 seasons, summer and winter. Spring and autumn only really lasted a couple of weeks. In Dubai the weather so far is sunny and hot with occassional rain and cool wind in December and January.

Fresh cut flowers really don't like the heat, even with the air con and wilt very quickly, they are also very expensive. So I looked at some artificial ones which looked quite realistic until you got up close to them. So the decision was made not to purchase any and to stick to some potted greenery.

I collected some unused pots and cups to use for planting

I used zip lock bags filled with water in the porous containers, before putting the flowers inside, I found some plastic tubes for the cut flowers and the plants I wanted to keep in their pots were wrapped with material and tied with some ribbon.

Hubby says there is always too much stuff on the dining room table, but I like to dress the table and I'm enjoying eating my meals surrounded by all the loveliness.

I'm also attempting to grow some more herbs but I'm growing them indoors and I'll let you know how I get on with them.

Over the next few weeks for Animal Tales, HDYGG and Time Traveller I will be using old posts for linking up while I'm on holiday. I'm hoping for an encounter with a bear or a moose while I'm in Canada for Animal Tales, I'll be blogging about Catherine's garden who you can find on twitter as @alwaysaredhead where I'll be staying for my holiday and of course there will be numerous posts for Time Traveller.

Dhow Dinner Cruise and Ramadan

It's summer in Dubai and that means it is very hot, which means outside activities are limited. The temperatures in the day are around 42c but only drop 4-5c after sunset. Last week in Dubai the top temperature was recorded at 50.5c, it was unbearable. It does help going down to the beach in the evenings where there is a slight breeze, but the water is the same temperature as the air, but psychologically it feels cooler.

There are many bargains to be had at this time of the year to encourage people to come outside. We took advantage of a half price Dhow Dinner Cruise this week.

Ramadan is approaching, still waiting for confirmation from the moon, due around Wednesday/Thursday next week. Everywhere is offering some amazing deals on experiences, restaurants, entertainment, food and general shopping. I'm going to be in Canada for 3 weeks of Ramadan, it was planned to be this way, as when I initially looked at these dates, we were still living in South Africa. But it's good on many levels. I'm not a muslim but I have to follow the same rules and won't be able to eat or drink in public during daylight hours, neither am I permitted to smoke which is my biggest vice. As I don't work, my activities would be very limited and although I do spend most of the day in the house anyway, due to the heat, I do like to pop out for a coffee and socialise, it can be very lonely otherwise.

The deal we had for the Dhow Dinner Cruise was AED 65 each, I responded to an advertisement on face book, I paid for my vouchers, which I then emailed to the company with my preferred date and they emailed back confirmation, however on the day we were due, I had no idea where we were going other than somewhere in the creek and both the Dhow and the discount company were slow to respond and eventually I received an SMS to tell me where. Baniyas Street, opp Bank Saderat Iran and Emirates NBD.

We left the car at the train station and travelled to Union.

If you arrive early there are plenty of shops open before and after the cruise and some really cheap souvenirs can be found here.

Signage isn't the best in Dubai, so using google maps and locating which side of the station the creek was on, we had a short walk to the creek and then had to locate our Dhow. Of course we turned left towards the Emirates NBD large building to discover the Dhow was actually at the other end of the creek next to the small local branch.

Sitting on the Dhow for 20 mins waiting for passengers to board, we were given unlimited water and fruit juices. Once everyone arrived and took their seats, we set off into the creek with all the other boats and after turning left, we promptly stopped while they opened up the buffet.

The food was very good, plenty of choice but if you're not a fan of hot and spicy food then this trip isn't for you. The food was clearly labelled so you knew if it was fish, chicken, lentils, veg etc. We piled a little bit of everything onto our plates. My son doesn't eat fish so avoided the last dish, which although written in English didn't actually tell us what it was, but looked fishy.

Having spooned it over my rice and returned to the table I took a forkful of the 'fish' with some rice and curried veg. Mmmmmmm interesting combination, I'd spooned a desert of sponge cake and white custard over my dinner. Oh well, I ate it, it wasn't that bad....lol.

We then cruised very slowly past the Sheiks Palace's. no photography is allowed and it was clearly sign posted to say this. The cruise operators were very quick to tell a couple they must put their cameras away, I believe it's an imprisonable offence. I wasn't taking the risk, especially after the 3 Brits who were jailed early this year for taking photos at an airport.

The entertainment was described as music and a magician. The speakers were a little dodgy which pleased me as I'm not a big fan of loud music. The entertainer was a man wearing a large skirt which whirled around in the air with him and lit up when he lifted it over his head and spun it around. He was moving from Dhow to Dhow on an Abra, a small boat, and the show only lasted a few minutes.

Although the food was good there were several complaints. I'm a great believer in actually making a complaint at the time and if the issue isn't resolved, I'll take it further with management and only if they fail to acknowledge the complaint will I take to social media, which usually is the only way to get a response, sadly, these days.

The toilets were filthy, even my son said the men's wasn't far off unusable. I have found in Dubai that of all the places I've visited that they without a doubt have the dirtiest toilets ever. It can't be cultural, there are too many nationalities living here, but I truly wonder what toilets look like back in some peoples homes. I did complain and was offered some toilet paper, when I said they needed cleaning, I was dismissed.

I also wasn't impressed by the way the Dhow looked. At the top of the stairs were the bins, black bags on the floor. Looking at the other Dhows on the creek you could see they were all cleaner, tidier and offered seating downstairs where the aircon was switched on, we however were made to stay upstairs and there were some grumpy, unhappy children whose parents didn't have the option, to take them out of the heat to cool down.

They allowed smoking on the Dhow, yes I'm a smoker, but still, we were eating and there were children around. Both parents of 2 families were smoking while their children were still eating, with the kids sitting on the edge of the Dhow the smoke was being sucked in front of their faces and all the way through my meal I had to contend with the smoke from the table behind me.

Thankfully the 2 hour cruise time was actually only 90 minutes and I had I been enjoying the cruise I may have been annoyed that it was 30 minutes less than advertised.

All in all, it really wasn't 'MY' thing. Everyone says 'you MUST go on the dhow dinner cruise, but now I know why they rant and rave over it, having seen some of the other boats, where alcohol was served, music was blaring and individuals probably paid around AED 500/£90 for the experience.

Large social, party scenes are not for me and I'm also not comfortable around large groups of people when alcohol is being consumed, especially on a boat, in the dark.

Over the next few weeks for Animal Tales, HDYGG and Time Traveller I will be using old posts for linking up while I'm on holiday. I'm hoping for an encounter with a bear or a moose while I'm in Canada for Animal Tales, I'll be blogging about Catherine's garden who you can find on twitter as @alwaysaredhead where I'll be staying for my holiday and of course thtere will be numerous posts for Time Traveller.

My Ultimate Bucket List

I've never had a Bucket List, raising 5 kids and working always limited both finances and time.

As a child there was only one thing I really, really wanted to do and that was to go to the Olympic Games. I did this in Barcelona in 1992 after winning a competition with the Daily Express.

When the children were older and finances more secure we started travelling, with and without the children and have had some amazing experiences. Since becoming expats and living in South Africa and now in Dubai, I've had some amazing opportunities for travel and adventure.

I was tagged by Morgan Prince to share my own ultimate bucket list. I think a lot of my list is a fantasy as it's quite a list that would cost quite a lot of money, I don't work at the moment, but if I did get a job I wouldn't have the time to complete the list.

What to look for when choosing kennelling and catteries for your pets

In South Africa a friend used to house and pet sit when we went away for any length of time and if out for the day a neighbour would pop round for the feeding. We acquired the cat after 2 years of living in SA and the dog the following year. By that time we'd established ourselves in the community and had friends we could rely on for animal and child care and vice versa. We've only been in Dubai 6 months and it does take quite a while to establish friendships and set up networks in which one can say 'please look after my cat and dog for 2 weeks.'

There are plenty of home services, where someone comes to your house twice a day to feed the animals and walk the dog, but after a few messages with a guy who runs a service like this I was very much put off. I'll not go into details but I didn't like his manner when I asked what checks were done on people and he replied 'oh we only employ western expats, not those from 3rd world countries' so many issues raised here.

I visited a couple of local vets where they offer boarding and was dismayed to see the size of the cages for both the cat and dog, although I'm sure they're regulation sizes, I was not happy with the thought of them being caged up all day and Bob only being let out twice a day for walking.

Boarding costs for your pets in Dubai are very expensive and as a result many expats abandon their pets before returning to their home countries to escape the summer here. The rescue centres are over run already with unwanted pets and many have had to close their doors, it's heartbreaking that people can do this to their animals. I've yet to see any stray dogs on the streets but we do have a large number of stray cats, this one in particular pays regular visits for food and water, but shhhhh don't tell hubby.

I've visited 3 places having joined groups on face book and asking questions.

I've opted to use DKC, they were the company who we used to bring our pets from South Africa in December 2014. I felt like I was choosing a pre school facility, I had loads of questions about walks, food, toilet needs and play and of course would they contact me if there were any issues?

The kennels and catteries are air conditioned, each pet has their own room with access indoors and out.

If you have more than 1 dog they can share and offer you a 20% discount on subsequent dogs.

During the day they take it it turns to let the cats, one at a time, wander freely around the cattery.

The dogs are taken on 2 walks a day and have access to one of several yards where they socialise.

I was really impressed with the facilities and the information given to me as to how they monitor food intake and toileting. I'm sure Bob will have a whale of a time and Pushkins will probably be a little stunned, but she's survived an international flight and relocation, she'll get over it.

It cost AED 135 per day for Bob and AED 110 per day for Pushkins and they'll be boarding for 11 days at a total cost of AED 2695/£478 which includes all their food. It's expensive and I'm sure hubby will have near heart failure when I tell him how much, but I can justify it by the fact that we are now 1 child down when it comes to air fares now, but it is this 1 child that we are going back to the UK to visit as he passes out of the British Army in September.
