Shopping for gifts back home - Review

As an expat living so far from my family in the UK, it is difficult to know what to buy my 4 year old niece for birthdays and Christmas, she grows so fast and as a Mother to 4 adult boys I have absolutely no idea what she has a preference for, other than she would like to be a Princess when she grows up.

She starts school in September and on being shown her new uniform she burst into tears stating 'but it isn't pink' bless, she was thinking she could wear one of her many Princess dresses to school as she does currently to nursery.

It was lovely this evening, despite the distance to be able to look at toys online together to choose a little gift from her Aunty to cheer her up. The Disney Princess range is extensive with toys starting at as little as AED 10.

Registering with the Toy Store was quick and easy and as a new customer I received 20% off my first order (see T&Cs)

With orders being dispatched within 24 hours with an estimated 3-4 day delivery, it is great to know that the gift will arrive quicker than the normal postal service of 2-3 weeks for the same cost as the delivery charge.

I’ve asked my niece to put together a little list for me to choose from for Christmas as I usually purchase and deliver gifts when I visit the UK around mid September. By buying them online I can purchase the latest Disney Princess range for my niece with just a click.

And with an additional wrapping and message service, at no extra charge, I will definitely be using the Toy Store again.

What can I take into Canada? Luggage and Travel insurance

I'm off to Canada tomorrow for 3 weeks, staying with Catherine Burden, my twitter buddy and penal for the past 5 years, supporting me, through friendship, from my move from the UK to South Africa and now to Dubai.

I'm not providing any links for this post as carry on and checked in luggage restrictions and customs clearance do vary from airline to airline and airports. I'd hate to provide information that is updated by the time someone clicks on the link.

I'm flying with Emirates and have a rather generous luggage allowance of 2 x 23kg suitcases, cabin bag and handbag. I am not used to packing a 23kg suitcase, as my normal routes are usually 1 x 30kg and as an expat I value the additional 7kg allowances, especially when I travel with documents and gifts for family back home. Without all the additional items, I was able to pack a 23kg case with ease, which includes gifts for Catherine and family, wash bag (I usually purchase these items on arrival to allow for extra weight) walking shoes, suitable clothing for camping and kayaking, rain wear (which I'm looking forward to) and birthday presents that I've been given to open during my stay. I will have plenty of room to bring back gifts and I can always check in my hand luggage case if necessary as I've packed a large handbag I could use for carry on.
Following airline regulations I've packed tweezers, nail scissors and other sharp items in the front pocket of my checked in luggage.

My case is by the door, I'm checked in and I've even selected my clothes for the morning. The rest of my pre flight/travel time will be spent, as always, watching Air Crash investigations and Border Control (Canada)

Hubby has a copy of Catherine's address and full names of family members and phone numbers. My gifts include food and wooded materials from the UK, South Africa and Dubai.

I fly alone, I a single, 43 year old woman, travelling from the Middle East/Africa, with multiple entry exit stamps, current and 2 expired visas in my passport. I get stopped, searched, swabbed on every flight I take, every time. I must match a profile.

Having watched Border Control Canada, I've realised I'm ideal for stopping at the border.

I will be issued with a Declaration Form and I will tick to declare the food and wooden gifts, sea shells and tea. They are all permitted goods, there is also a restriction to weight, but I have to declare them or I could face them being confiscated and issued with a fine. I am allowed to take in 200 cigarettes and either 1.5 litres of wine or 1.1 litres of alcohol, duty free.

I don't need a visa to visit Canada as I'm British, my only concern is my return trip as my visa is for residency and not work, several times I've been questioned as to whether I'm allowed to travel on my own and what my intentions are on arrival and why I'm not starting or ending my journey in the UK.

Our medical insurance in South Africa covered us for trips abroad, including to the UK, technically we are not entitled to NHS services as expats and have been out of the UK for 5 years, we don't pay taxes. (we fill in a self assessment tax return form every year though) Our actual travel in regards to delays, cancellations etc is covered by our credit card. So this year I actually had to purchase travel insurance and it was a mine field. There was the time hubby and I went to Las Vegas for a week and 'forgot' to purchase any insurance, so it's an area we've now planned with care.

It's very easy to select the cheapest option, but you really need to take care, especially if you know what activities you'll be taking part in.

For example Catherine is taking me camping, we will be travelling to the camp site via the water, in a kayak. The basic travel insurance does NOT cover me for kayaking/canoeing unless with a qualified instructor and in an organised group....who would've thought eh? I've purchased annual insurance Worldwide to include Canada and the USA. I will be spending 30 days in South Africa later this year and have another trip planned to the UK. I'm also hoping I'll be travelling with hubby to Turkey and we'll be off to Oman for a visa run when the youngest son visits in July.

It's worth noting that most travel insurance covers you for 21 days per trip on an annual policy, so I made sure the policy I purchased covered me for multiple trips up to 31 days and worldwide included Canada and the USA.

I will get my money worth's from the insurance though, touch wood I've never lost a case, but hubby and the kids have had theirs delayed and/or items missing and cases damaged on arrival. Hubby has required emergency medical care outside his country of residence, but as he travels with his employers this is covered for him automatically. I, however, have an excess to pay for none emergency's.

My last 2 things to do are:

Email Catherine a copy of my Insurance.
I always insist our visitors give me a copy of theirs, who knows if I had a serious accident how costs would be covered in the interim period if Catherine was unaware of who I was insured with. Although medical care is free in Canada, I'm not Canadian.

Call the banks.
They need to know I am travelling overseas and will be using both my UAE and UK banking cards.

Week 24 - My Sunday Photo

I'm off to Canada on Wednesday, I may have mentioned this once or twice on social media the past few weeks.

I've also mentioned before how Sunday in Dubai is the start of the working week and how I get confused with what day it is without a job or school timetable to go by. But it's been even more complicated this week with hubby returning from the States on Friday evening after travelling for 26 hours and his body clock still being 9 hours behind.

As I'm going to be in Canada for my birthday (did I mention I'm going to Canada?) and hubby being on his own for Father's Day (well he'll be in work) and with hubby actually being awake at dinner time we decided to pop out to our favourite restaurant to celebrate both occasions.

Creating a garden in the desert - a visit to the garden centre

I only have a couple of photos of the garden centre as I was told off for taking photos. However I can report that a garden centre in Dubai is very similar to those in the UK and as a matter of fact the same as South Africa.

There's the standard cafe, pots, tools, a selection of gifts, clothing and this particular garden centre featured a bike and a book shop as well as the plants and seeds and garden ornaments. You cannot buy fertilisers or weed killer in Dubai, when you ask you're told to go to Satwa, which is an area of Dubai, but no one tells you where or which shop so I'm doing without.

It's too hot in Dubai, even when the sun sets, the temperature only drops to around 31c and it's still too hot to sit outside for any length of time to actually enjoy the garden, so I thought I should bring the garden inside. I was looking for herbs and strawberry plants, as I'm finding it difficult to grow from seed, but I've been informed as it's summer now, they're out of season.
I spent 4 years in the southern hemisphere where the seasons are opposite to the UK, but there were only really 2 seasons, summer and winter. Spring and autumn only really lasted a couple of weeks. In Dubai the weather so far is sunny and hot with occassional rain and cool wind in December and January.

Fresh cut flowers really don't like the heat, even with the air con and wilt very quickly, they are also very expensive. So I looked at some artificial ones which looked quite realistic until you got up close to them. So the decision was made not to purchase any and to stick to some potted greenery.

I collected some unused pots and cups to use for planting

I used zip lock bags filled with water in the porous containers, before putting the flowers inside, I found some plastic tubes for the cut flowers and the plants I wanted to keep in their pots were wrapped with material and tied with some ribbon.

Hubby says there is always too much stuff on the dining room table, but I like to dress the table and I'm enjoying eating my meals surrounded by all the loveliness.

I'm also attempting to grow some more herbs but I'm growing them indoors and I'll let you know how I get on with them.

Over the next few weeks for Animal Tales, HDYGG and Time Traveller I will be using old posts for linking up while I'm on holiday. I'm hoping for an encounter with a bear or a moose while I'm in Canada for Animal Tales, I'll be blogging about Catherine's garden who you can find on twitter as @alwaysaredhead where I'll be staying for my holiday and of course there will be numerous posts for Time Traveller.

Dhow Dinner Cruise and Ramadan

It's summer in Dubai and that means it is very hot, which means outside activities are limited. The temperatures in the day are around 42c but only drop 4-5c after sunset. Last week in Dubai the top temperature was recorded at 50.5c, it was unbearable. It does help going down to the beach in the evenings where there is a slight breeze, but the water is the same temperature as the air, but psychologically it feels cooler.

There are many bargains to be had at this time of the year to encourage people to come outside. We took advantage of a half price Dhow Dinner Cruise this week.

Ramadan is approaching, still waiting for confirmation from the moon, due around Wednesday/Thursday next week. Everywhere is offering some amazing deals on experiences, restaurants, entertainment, food and general shopping. I'm going to be in Canada for 3 weeks of Ramadan, it was planned to be this way, as when I initially looked at these dates, we were still living in South Africa. But it's good on many levels. I'm not a muslim but I have to follow the same rules and won't be able to eat or drink in public during daylight hours, neither am I permitted to smoke which is my biggest vice. As I don't work, my activities would be very limited and although I do spend most of the day in the house anyway, due to the heat, I do like to pop out for a coffee and socialise, it can be very lonely otherwise.

The deal we had for the Dhow Dinner Cruise was AED 65 each, I responded to an advertisement on face book, I paid for my vouchers, which I then emailed to the company with my preferred date and they emailed back confirmation, however on the day we were due, I had no idea where we were going other than somewhere in the creek and both the Dhow and the discount company were slow to respond and eventually I received an SMS to tell me where. Baniyas Street, opp Bank Saderat Iran and Emirates NBD.

We left the car at the train station and travelled to Union.

If you arrive early there are plenty of shops open before and after the cruise and some really cheap souvenirs can be found here.

Signage isn't the best in Dubai, so using google maps and locating which side of the station the creek was on, we had a short walk to the creek and then had to locate our Dhow. Of course we turned left towards the Emirates NBD large building to discover the Dhow was actually at the other end of the creek next to the small local branch.

Sitting on the Dhow for 20 mins waiting for passengers to board, we were given unlimited water and fruit juices. Once everyone arrived and took their seats, we set off into the creek with all the other boats and after turning left, we promptly stopped while they opened up the buffet.

The food was very good, plenty of choice but if you're not a fan of hot and spicy food then this trip isn't for you. The food was clearly labelled so you knew if it was fish, chicken, lentils, veg etc. We piled a little bit of everything onto our plates. My son doesn't eat fish so avoided the last dish, which although written in English didn't actually tell us what it was, but looked fishy.

Having spooned it over my rice and returned to the table I took a forkful of the 'fish' with some rice and curried veg. Mmmmmmm interesting combination, I'd spooned a desert of sponge cake and white custard over my dinner. Oh well, I ate it, it wasn't that bad....lol.

We then cruised very slowly past the Sheiks Palace's. no photography is allowed and it was clearly sign posted to say this. The cruise operators were very quick to tell a couple they must put their cameras away, I believe it's an imprisonable offence. I wasn't taking the risk, especially after the 3 Brits who were jailed early this year for taking photos at an airport.

The entertainment was described as music and a magician. The speakers were a little dodgy which pleased me as I'm not a big fan of loud music. The entertainer was a man wearing a large skirt which whirled around in the air with him and lit up when he lifted it over his head and spun it around. He was moving from Dhow to Dhow on an Abra, a small boat, and the show only lasted a few minutes.

Although the food was good there were several complaints. I'm a great believer in actually making a complaint at the time and if the issue isn't resolved, I'll take it further with management and only if they fail to acknowledge the complaint will I take to social media, which usually is the only way to get a response, sadly, these days.

The toilets were filthy, even my son said the men's wasn't far off unusable. I have found in Dubai that of all the places I've visited that they without a doubt have the dirtiest toilets ever. It can't be cultural, there are too many nationalities living here, but I truly wonder what toilets look like back in some peoples homes. I did complain and was offered some toilet paper, when I said they needed cleaning, I was dismissed.

I also wasn't impressed by the way the Dhow looked. At the top of the stairs were the bins, black bags on the floor. Looking at the other Dhows on the creek you could see they were all cleaner, tidier and offered seating downstairs where the aircon was switched on, we however were made to stay upstairs and there were some grumpy, unhappy children whose parents didn't have the option, to take them out of the heat to cool down.

They allowed smoking on the Dhow, yes I'm a smoker, but still, we were eating and there were children around. Both parents of 2 families were smoking while their children were still eating, with the kids sitting on the edge of the Dhow the smoke was being sucked in front of their faces and all the way through my meal I had to contend with the smoke from the table behind me.

Thankfully the 2 hour cruise time was actually only 90 minutes and I had I been enjoying the cruise I may have been annoyed that it was 30 minutes less than advertised.

All in all, it really wasn't 'MY' thing. Everyone says 'you MUST go on the dhow dinner cruise, but now I know why they rant and rave over it, having seen some of the other boats, where alcohol was served, music was blaring and individuals probably paid around AED 500/£90 for the experience.

Large social, party scenes are not for me and I'm also not comfortable around large groups of people when alcohol is being consumed, especially on a boat, in the dark.

Over the next few weeks for Animal Tales, HDYGG and Time Traveller I will be using old posts for linking up while I'm on holiday. I'm hoping for an encounter with a bear or a moose while I'm in Canada for Animal Tales, I'll be blogging about Catherine's garden who you can find on twitter as @alwaysaredhead where I'll be staying for my holiday and of course thtere will be numerous posts for Time Traveller.

My Ultimate Bucket List

I've never had a Bucket List, raising 5 kids and working always limited both finances and time.

As a child there was only one thing I really, really wanted to do and that was to go to the Olympic Games. I did this in Barcelona in 1992 after winning a competition with the Daily Express.

When the children were older and finances more secure we started travelling, with and without the children and have had some amazing experiences. Since becoming expats and living in South Africa and now in Dubai, I've had some amazing opportunities for travel and adventure.

I was tagged by Morgan Prince to share my own ultimate bucket list. I think a lot of my list is a fantasy as it's quite a list that would cost quite a lot of money, I don't work at the moment, but if I did get a job I wouldn't have the time to complete the list.

So with all that in mind I really need to get on with finishing Number 1.

Life after kids

I'm 44, I've been a mum for 23 years.

I stopped parenting in January in 2014, despite still having a child in full time education till July

The second youngest son and last child left home in January 2014, aged 19, having finished his matric in South Africa and moved back to the UK. He is based currently in Yorkshire and is moving further north in October 2015. Returning to the UK as an adult was a difficult process.

It would seem that most peoples children leave home over a period of time. They go to Uni or get a job whilst still living at home until they can save up for their own place and/or they live nearby and still spend a lot of their spare time with their families. For us this isn't the case and we've had little input into their lives as adults which you can read about here.

On my last couple of trips to the UK the logistics of trying to visit all 5 children has been tricky. The youngest and eldest 2 children live in Gloucestershire, I stay in Monmouth. Obviously the eldest child with her disabilities doesn't work and I can see here whenever I want, however any trips out have to be kept to her routine of feeding and changing and her bedtime needs, the youngest lives 15 miles from her and I have to visit around school hours and the eldest is unemployed so as long as I give him his bus fare he can come and meet me with his siblings.

I don't have a base where I can take the children to, which would make life a lot easier and with the other 2 boys living in Leeds and York visits to them are costly and tiring but I do them willingly.

I've reached the conclusion that even if we were still living in Malvern, UK, we'd have the same logisitcal issues and the reality is that the adult children have their own lives, jobs/education, friends and they probably wouldn't want to traipse backwards and forwards on the train, on their weekends off to sit with their mum, doing what exactly.

I do feel cheated out of the last few years of parenthood with the youngest being in boarding school, but then he was in full time boarding when we lived in the UK anyway, he was just 20 minutes down the road and was home for all the school holidays, mind you he still is home for the major school holidays and often spends his exe at weekends with his mates who also board.

I have suffered with empty nest syndrome, however a week on both the good and the bad kicked in and had me in tears again, but a change of country and setting up our new child free home in Dubai has really helped with my adjustment.

But there really is life after kids. I started my journey as a mother aged 21, there is so much out there for me to see, achieve and be part of. But until our expat journey comes to an end I'm adapting to life after kids with so much free time I don't know what to do with myself. I expect when we return to the UK at some point in time, I'll pick up at the very least a job, hopefully a career again, even though I haven't worked for nearly 5 years, my experience volunteering in South Africa and living on two continents will count for something. I'm also assuming that there may be grand children by the time we return to the UK in a couple of years time and who knows what else may happen.

I'm spending large amounts of time on my own as hubbies job is taking him away more often and further afield.

I'm now learning to embrace my 'me time' sit back, relax and enjoy the simple things in life, such as

A nice leisurely breakfast every morning
I can also eat it in bed

Sitting in the garden in the evenings, reading a book and enjoying a glass of wine
Playing with the cat and dog, long walks and trips out to the lakes.

Cups of coffee with friends or just me and my laptop

Evenings on the beach and a swim in the sea
And the sweetie jar actually contains sweets

And lots of travel to see the children in the UK, have one of the kids coming to visit this week and another in July, visit new countries, I'm off to Canada on the 17th June and return to familiar ones to see friends, back to South Africa in October.

Week 23 - My Sunday Photo

I like my photo to be taken on Sunday and published as late in the day as possible, as for me, Sunday can sum up the week just gone or the week that is coming.

Today's photo sums up the week ahead for me, it's a list of things to do today and during the week before I go on holiday to Canada on the 17th, some of it can wait till I get back, such as the tax form and off shore bank account, but most of it was completed today and I'll hopefully manage to get round to commenting on a handful of My Sunday Photo once I've linked up.

I always make it a rule with some of the smaller linkys to comment on every post added before mine and to comment on posts of everyone who has visited and left a comment on my blog posts and I always reply to my blog comments whether the person who commented sees it or not.

You'll see bottom left on my 'to do list...' that I've listed that as something to do today.

Do you have a routine when it comes to leaving and replying to comments?

Week 23 - Project 365

It's been a much better week health wise, my back is almost better compared to this time last week, but it's still not 100%. I find driving is ok, but I'm in discomfort afterwards, as is sitting down. Bending down to lift anything is still not possible and I've been advised not to. I've been swimming in the sea every night this week. It's really strange to enter the water when it's the same temperature as the air. There's no way to cool down at all in Dubai so I visited the ski dome, on Saturday, not for skiing mind, just to have some coldness.

The temperature in the UAE topped 50c this week, making it the hottest place in the world and you don't half know it. Think sitting in front of your oven, full blast and door open, then add a hairdryer on full blast to your face and you'll experience what it's like here.

I've also been on my own all week, with hubby in the States, he's not back till next weekend and with child 4 of 5 in South Africa I'm juggling 4 different timezones with communication, hubby is a day behind me right now and in less than 2 weeks I'll be in Canada and the timezones will be reversed. Son is 2 hours behind Dubai and the rest of the family in the UK are 3 hours behind. I need one of those airport clocks.

Day 151 ‪#‎onedailypositive‬ ‪#‎HaHaHa‬ ‪#‎fmsphotoaday‬ ‪#‎IWant‬‪ #‎snaphappybritmums‬ ‪#‎project365‬

I want something different to eat other than salad and oh how I've laughed at my stupidity stood in the kitchen cooking 2 portions for 2 of beef strog and Mexican stew for the freezer to heat up and serve with rice and 1 portion of sweet chili chicken for tomorrow's dinner, it's 44c outside and I've spent the afternoon quite literally slaving over a hot stove with the air con blasting on the back of my neck.

Day 152 #onedailypositive #many #fmsphotoaday#OpenWindow #snaphappybritmums #project365
Many windows on the roof of @OasisMallDubai there appears to be some kind of crank/handle that might just open window(s)

Day 153 #onedailypositive #lookingup #fmsphotoaday #mixupyourmenu #snaphappybritmums #project365
This photo was taken yesterday of the plane my son was in as he left Dubai for South Africa. He will be stopping over in Dubai next week for 4 days so things are looking up in more ways than one.

Day 154 #onedailypositive #silly #fmsphotoaday #garden #snaphappybritmums #project365

It would be #silly to sit in the #garden today, it's not much cooler when the sun goes down either.

Day 155 #onedailypositive #StartsWithB #fmsphotoaday #DaysOut #snaphappybritmums #project365

Well there aren't many days out in Dubai in the summer. This is our first summer living here and wow it is hot, in fact the UAE has been the hottest place in the world the last few days. I do of course go out, a lot of expats leave the UAE for summer but we don't have the luxury of being able to afford 2 homes. Hubby is away in the States so he's having a couple of weeks respite and I'm off to Canada on the 17th for 3 weeks. Apart from walking round malls my 'outdoor' time is restricted to early mornings and late evenings. So not technically a #DayOut on the Beach, but if you add up an hour every evening this week, I've had the equivilant and it's just as good on the beach after sunset.

Day 156 #onedailypositive #LookingDown #fmsphotoaday #abstract #snaphappybritmums #project365

Looking Down I see water, I'm in the desert in the UAE, some 60kms outside of Dubai. Although not entirely abstract as there is actually a lake here, the concept of putting a lake out in the desert shows that anything is possible when you have enough money.

Day 157 #onedailypositive #WhoIAm #fmsphotoaday #TreeInBloom #snaphappybritmums #project365

I've been struggling with my identity since relocating from the UK to South Africa and to Dubai 6 months ago. This is my family tree, not only does it tell you where I came from but also, Who I Am.
I can trace back on both sides to my Great Great Great Grandparents with the earliest recorded birth as 1770. Unfortunately a lot of children died very young. The only recorded divorces, that I know of are me and my sister and 1 cousin. Children born out of wedlock were for me and 2 cousins, plus one aunt who divorced pre children. There are stories of many more children and divorces, but I guess I may never find that out.
