My Sunday Photo - Week 124 - O is for outdoors

It's summer in Dubai, which means over the next few months we will get temperatures up to 50c during the days and mid 30s over night.

Once the temperature reaches 35c+ our outdoor life comes to a halt, the evenings are still cool enough to walk the dog, we can still sit on the beach in the mornings and late afternoons and the cat still goes out at night.

Once the temperature reaches 40c+ there's another change to our outdoor life as in we only go out when we have to. Such as to hang the washing up (I do this before bed) and walk the short distance from the kitchen door to the garage to get to the car to go out. The cat's litter tray is re introduced and the doors are manned to stop her escaping, if she does, I need to find her and bring her in within an hour. We stand at the door to let Bob out to pee and poo.

Ensuring Bob gets enough exercise is difficult, the walks drop from twice a day, to once a day and the distance is cut as it gets hotter. I start to walk bare foot, to ensure the ground won't burn Bob's paws, when it gets too hot for me, then we turn round and come home. We play ball in the house and I find
indoor doggie play areas to visit at least once a week.

Do you live in a country where your pets access to the outdoors is limited? Do you have an indoor cat? How do you manage to ensure they stay healthy and get some exercise?

  1. Poor Bob, although it obviously comes with the territory. I love the heat, but I think I would find a Dubai summer a little oppressive. #MySundayPhoto

    1. it's quite depressing and very tiring to be stuck indoors and it gets cold in the malls with the air con

  2. Hi Suzanne, summer gets hot here, but never as hot as 50C! That is crazy hot! In July and August we don't walk the dogs, in the past we have taken them only for them to lie down and refuse to move. Luckily we have a decent sized garden for them to explore and run around when it takes there fancy. Our cat s an outdoor one and always manages to find somewhere cool to lie. Usually on the woodpile under the tree or on the cooler marble of the balcony.

    1. Bob won't get walked in july/August either, the cat is currently outside sleeping in the shade but i have to keep a close eye on here, because of the heat, sadly there is little temperature difference between direct sunlight and shade

  3. This sounds really tough! I knew it was hard on you, but I hadn't considered the effect on the pets too :(

  4. I love the fact Bob is keeping a close eye on the cat. You forget what effect it must have on animals

    1. Bob had to be coaxed into place, he doesn't trust the cat, this is the closest he would get

  6. Wow! That's hot! It must be hard to adjust to staying in during those temperatures! I just want it to be warmer here in the Uk and you want it to be cooler!
I look forward to reading more about your life in Dubai xx

  7. Wow that sounds crazy about hanging your washing out before bed but I do remember coming to Dubai in July once and we pretty ran from taxi to air conditioned building constantly!

  8. That's interesting about the barefoot walking. Makes sense. It's hard for us, but poor animals with all that fur

    1. the cat suffers the most, but also chooses to go outside at any opportunity or search out a sun trap in the house, both animals are from South Africa so they are used to the heat, just not all year round and as high as this

  9. That is hot. When we lived in Italy, the locals used to shave the dogs to keep them cool. Breeds we'd never consider grooming like that in the UK. We didn't, as our only long haired dog was a breed that was breed with an insulating coat against the heat or cold. Then again, it was never as hot as Dubai.#MySundayPhoto

    1. it irritates me when people shave their cats and dogs as they think it will help keep them cooler, we have to use sun block on bobs nose in summer and tips of his ears

    1. that photo took a lot of time to stage, this is the closest Bob would get to the cat, she swipes at him if he gets too near
