Herons and Cranes in the Desert in Dubai with #AnimalTales

Without air conditioning I doubt humans would be able to live in the Dubai, since the middle of May until a few weeks ago temperatures have hit 50c and humidity has been high, the water out of the cold tap has registered at 46c and the sea temps have been around 35c, so it always surprises me how much wildlife is actually around. I've seen several birds that I assumed were migrating and strayed off course such as the Lilac Breasted Roller and Hoope that were common in South Africa where we used to live to discover they are actually native to Arabia.

Once we a week hubby and I take Bob into the desert for a run a round and a splash in the artificial man made lakes that are cooled and filtered to encourage the wildlife. I've seen Plovers and Doves on a regular basis but this is the first time I've seen a Heron

Now in the title I mentioned Herons and Cranes. I'm easily confused with birds so I googled to make sure I identified the birds correctly. I believe this is a Great Blue Heron, my google search needed to be fine tuned a little as when you google 'Cranes in the desert in Dubai' this is what pops up.

  3. I saw my first lilac breasted roller last week, in Madikwe! Funny that you see them there too - it's like the swifts, I always wonder if we are seeing the sames ones that we saw in the UK in the summer :)

    2. I would have loved to be able to check bird rings as like you we were convinced that the birds we saw in Nigeria over Chrstmas were the ones we saw flying south over the Channel coast earlier in the year.

  4. It looks so dry and hot there, it must be quite hard for the birds, but I guess they adapt, they certainly look healthy in your photos #AnimalsTales

  6. Wonderful captures of the herons. How good to hear that they are making a concerted effort to attract wildlife in Dubai with cooled man made lakes! Now if only we could have some warmed lakes here in UK for humans :)

Sorry for the late comment, your blog decided to default to magazine layout and my brain was a bit slow figuring out how to change it!

  9. It shows how well birds and animals can adapt to the heat when they can live without air conditioning. Apparently humans do also adapt and I bet you are much better able to cope in Dubai than I would be. Nice cranes for #AnimalTales BTW :)
